Pulmonary and Internal Medicine Associates, Inc. also offers to the Greater Hartford Community expertise in the field of Aviation Medicine. More than 9,000 licensed pilots are based in Connecticut, southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Aviation Medicine Center, a division of Pulmonary and Internal Medicine Associates, is here to serve them. The Center is the only one of its kind in the Northeast. It offers a full range of medical services to professional and general aviation pilots, from medical certificate renewals, to counseling, to specialized treatment for aviation-related illnesses.

The Aviation Medicine Center offers a full range of services for private and commercial pilots including:

  • Authorization of medical certifications, Classes I, II and III.
  • Physical exams for new pilots and consultation prior to flight training.
  • ECG transmission to the FAA for Class I physical exams.
  • Help for pilots with medical deferments who wish to regain certification.
  • Expert consultation advice on special issues such as flying with heart conditions and diabetes.
  • Aviation accident investigation: physicians are available to work with the Northeast Division of the FAA.
  • Referral and access to specialists in areas related to aviation medicine: cardiology, ophthalmology, otology, psychiatry, substance abuse and endocrinology.
  • Advice and counseling in aviation medicine issues and illnesses, such as vertigo, hypoxia, aero otitis and aero sinusitis.

Aviation Medicine Staff

The staff of the Aviation Medicine Center includes personnel with extensive knowledge of aviation issues. The center's medical director, Michael Teiger, M.D., is a senior aviation medical examiner (AME) and is both a commercially and instrument rated private pilot as well as a certified flight instructor. Dr. Teiger has been certified by the Federal Aviation Administration to practice Aviation Medicine for over 15 years. He has many years of experience in the field of general aviation and has over 1,600 hours of flight time in general aviation aircraft. He has had a close working relationships with the aviation community and with the Flight Standards District Office at Bradley Field in Windsor Locks and he has frequently lectured on topics in aviation safety and health to the general aviation community.
